Introduction:
Language skills can prove to be an important attribute in many professions. The job of an interpreter can be of different types. Translation work can be related to a variety of fields like technical, scientific literary or business. Translators work on books, scripts, articles and translate them into specified languages. Apart from having linguistic skills, a translator must possess adequate knowledge in the area of the work so as to maintain the style and essence of the orignal text.
FREELANCING: Often, after pursuing courses in foreign languages, people like to work as freelancers. These people get work in translation bureaus, research organisations, international organisations like UNO, FAO, foreign companies, Reserve Bank of India, publishing houses etc. Expertise in foreign language coupled with other additional qualifications in areas like management, tourism, hospitality industry, airlines can be even fruitful and better the chances for employment opportunities.
Personality:
Linguistic ability is nurtured from an early stage and improves with its regular and correct usage, therefore important to practice it regularly. Learning languages can be exhaustive as at times it takes long before one gets acquainted with it. So it is important to be patient and deligent. Other job opportunities for language specialist lie with the travel and tourism sector, hotel industry, exhibitions and fairs, airlines offices, export agencies, radio stations and trade organisations. Teaching can also be given a thought. For pursuing a career in teaching, a teacher should be a graduate in that foreign language and must have a teaching degree.
Remunerations:
Emoluments vary with the kind and the place of work. For instance, a career in teaching can earn anything from Rs.10000/- p.m to Rs. 20000/- p.m. A Lecturer's pay scale is between Rs. 10000/- p.m. to Rs. 13000/- p.m. and professors can expect over Rs. 18000/- p.m. Those working as translators get paid between Rs. 50/- to Rs.100/- per page. An interpreter gets paid on hourly basis and at present the rate varies from Rs. 300/- to Rs. 500/- per hour. Veterinary Science as a career

Introduction:
Veterinary science is a medical profession that deals with the control of disease in animals. A veterinarian or a doctor of animals' primary responsibility is to look after the health and welfare of the animals. It also includes the breeding and scientific handling of livestock. Growth and prosperity of an economy, to an extent is reflected in its physical appearance. The industry responsible for this is the construction industry, which for quite sometime is experiencing boom. Times have changed and so has our focus. From, the basic necessity of housing and shelter of yesteryears, emphasis is now given on comfort, luxury and style. All this has importantly led to creation of avenues for those interested in making a career in this sector. In the last few decades our economy has witnessed hectic and massive construction activities, new structures have been raised, townships have evolved, evident of growth in the sector.
The construction task involves both the designer and constructors. Any built structure is an outcome of close coordination and participation of a number of people, technical and non-technical, including architects, contractors, surveyors, engineers, designers alongwith bricklayers, masons, carpenters, electricians, plumbers etc. Everyone is specialised in his own area hence beyond comparison.
Nature of Work:
Architecture, in particular is the study which deals with planning and designing of building and structures. The subject, not new at all, has been practiced since ages in different parts of the world. Designing any structure not only moves around giving physical facelift to it but involves other important factors which are equally important like its functional utility, safety and economy. B.Arch is a 5 year course and most schools and colleges select students through a written test. Entrance test for B.Arch Courses- The Council of Architecture conducts an aptitude test on an All India basis for admission to colleges of Architecture. The Supreme Court has given its verdict on the 27 per cent reservations and the government is all geared up to implement it from this session only. The much-debated other backward classes (OBC) quota will be implemented at prestigious educational institutions like IITs and IIMs nationwide. Why the reservation card was played by Arjun Singh is altogether a different matter and now let us concentrate on the impact of this extra reservations on higher education in India.
The faculty shortage: The number of faculty hasn’t increased all that much with the subsequent rise in the number of students over the years, and this is because there’s a huge shortage of quality teachers. Latest survey says that the nation’s seven IITs need about 900 additional faculty members before the next academic session to counteract the shortfall. This survey was done when there was no provision for the OBC quotas. The government has said that the total number of seats belonging to general category wouldn’t come down. But can government tell us from where will they get the teachers? In a scenario where leading tech colleges across America and Britain offer 1:6 faculty student ratio, most IITs just manage to scrape up a 1:12 ratio while struggling to stem attrition and quality faculty. In some of IITs, it is hard to maintain a ratio of 1:14. The same is the story of the medical institutes. We recently saw the strike by medicos in Mumbai following the reduction in post graduate seats for need of the teachers. The seats, which were 1900 in 2001 have been reduced to 450 in the year 2008. The reservation is definitely going to impact on the quality of education.
The infrastructure: Government announced recently that it’s going to open 10 more IITs and IIMs and the apparent reason is that it wants to promote higher technical education in the country, but won’t opening more IITs and IIMs dilute the brand of these institutions? Already these institutes are facing crunch of faculty members and it is yet to be seen how the government will manage to attract more faculty members for newer institutes. Secondly, do we have requisite infrastructure? The government has no solutions to the problems related to shortage of laboratories, playgrounds, staff, hostels and classrooms in existing institutes. Will they be able to sustain newer institutes or will it turn out as just another plan on paper? Do you remember, the government in 2003 planned to open six all India institute of medical sciences (AIIMS) in the country. The plan has yet not took off. What a pity!
The merit compromise: The identity of any organization is its quality. Output depends on input of quality. Anything we do should not disturb the quality of input. Why today IIT or IIM or IISC stands so high in quality index, this is because the input quality is extraordinary. The whole idea of reservation, and that too in premier institutes such as IITs and IIMs and a medical institute such as AIIMS would reflect on the quality of graduates that these institutes would deliver. The deserving ones feel left out in the race despite spending a fortune and making all efforts to cope up with the pressure of admissions. We should focus on finding a solution to the issue ‘without diluting excellence’. The students of these institutes have made their country proud and created a brand in the global market. This is because they were few of the best brains in the country and won the fierce competition where there are 10,000 people for one seat. If now we will have 50 per cent seats where the merit is not the sole criteria, then it is bound to impact the ‘merit’ of these institutes. If OBC candidates manage to get admissions into IITs and IIMs, there is no doubt that the OBC candidates will get the skills required to get job offers that make media analysts drool. In the bargain, if some upper caste candidate is deprived of a seat; well, that is social justice in action!
Losing investors: Many people argue that reserving seats at India’s few merit-based and uncorrupted institutes of higher learning will dilute standards, bring down student morale, and jump-start a brain drain that had just started to reverse. At a time when India is looking towards its youth population to take India to new heights it is of umpteen importance that we provide everyone with the best education possible. Till date, the government has failed miserably to maintain the standards of elite institutes and is definitely looking for private players to invest in the education sector. Many economists are worried about the effect of reservations on India’s competitiveness. Surjit Bhalla, an economist who often advises New Delhi, said in an interview that reservations would become a problem for investors. If there isn’t enough qualified talent available in India, they "will not hesitate to go to China, Vietnam, or even to Bangladesh and Pakistan."
IITs, AIIMS and IIMs are temples of education that command international respect. Their students represent the face of modern India. Let us not ‘mandalise’ education and vandalise young lives. Perhaps Minister Arjun Singh would do well to recall the words: "Give a man food and he will be grateful yet poor. Give a man the means to earn his food and he will be grateful and financially independent." He just needs to substitute food with education. We need to focus on the better primary education first. As I would like to sum it up. There are two cliffs – one is the student and the other is quality higher education. In order to bridge these two cliffs, we need quality primary education. But the government, instead of strengthening the bridge, is focusing on one cliff only. If that is the cast, then the bridge is weak and a student will fall into the pit joining the two cliffs.

The politics of reservation in education

It is the yummiest cake all politicians � irrespective of political stripes -- want a big pie of.
The Indian Parliament has passed the 104th Constitution Amendment Bill, providing reservations for the socially and educationally backward classes, besides the Scheduled Classes and Scheduled Tribes, in all private aided and unaided educational institutions.
The amendment is the government's attempt to offset the effect of the recent Supreme Court judgement that categorically said that in an unaided (which runs without government funding) educational institution -- whether run by non-minorities or minorities -- the government cannot implement its policy of reservation.
"This amendment is nothing short of a revolution because good education is every Indian family's dream," Indira Jaising, eminent Constitution expert, told rediff.com
"For the first time, unaided private institutions -- where better education is provided -- are now under the purview of the State. Private education institutions that are accruing huge profits and no responsibilities felt no obligation to Dalits. This is no longer the case," Jaisingh added.
The political mileage resulting from the move, which directly benefits more than 70 per cent of voters, is so huge that of the 381 members present in the Lok Sabha, 379 voted in favour of it.
The important amendment is an attempt by Congress to re-establish its lost credentials among tribals, Dalits and Other Backward Classes who have moved away from it since the emergence of regional parties and the Bharatiya Janata party.
Column: The 104th Amendment Bill is dangerous
The trouble is, as analyst Amulya Ganguli put it, when a political party eyes a vote bank, it forgets that others too are on the prowl.
The BJP can't stomach the huge chunk of the vote bank going Congress' way. It somewhat convincingly asked why minority-managed -- meaning Christian and Muslim -- institutions are not included in the amendment.
The BJP wants substantial reservation for socially and educationally backward castes in these institutions also. Minority institutions have staunchly resisted the move.
Although Article 30 of the Indian Constitution gives the right to minorities to establish and administer educational institutions, in practice they have become highly commercialised where poor or backward students can't even dream of getting education.
For example, in Andhra Pradesh alone 9,000 engineering seats in minority colleges were not filled up because they could not find students rich enough to pay for them.
The Bill is certainly going to upset upper-caste Hindus because it will shrink seats in the general category.
The BJP tried to capitalise on both these classes' sentiments by unsuccessfully moving an amendment to the Bill to get Muslim and Christian education institutions under the purview of the Bill. But the BJP move only got 110 votes out of the 382 members who voted.
The BJP's Ananth Kumar argued in Parliament that, 'I do not know why the UPA [United Progressive Alliance] government has not given this provision of reservation to the minority institutions. This Constitutional Amendment is an eyewash.
'After passing this lopsided Constitution (Amendment) Bill there would be no medical colleges, no engineering colleges, no IT institutions, no law institutions in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 in the name of non-minority institutions,' he argued.
Column: Time for reservation in minority institutions
'The UPA government is doing a draconian social injustice and creating a minority private institutions bazaar in the country. Education should not be nationalised and education should also be in the private domain.'
In reality, the minority-run institutions have not been above board.
During the debate, politicians cited an example that in Mumbai, more than 70 per cent of the majority-run institutions claim a minority status.
BJP leader Bal Apte argued in the Rajya Sabha that, 'The main problem is not of religious minorities, but of linguistic minorities. They hardly have the presence of their community in a particular region, but because their language is different, they establish an institution and claim a minority status and that really gives them an opportunity to earn money.'
All over India, minorities do run a few exceptionally dedicated institutions, helping the poor and bringing social justice, but most of them are profit-making machines. The cries to include minority institutions are raised loudly because the private institutions are better managed than the government-owned institutions.
In Karnataka, at least four government colleges do not have even 60 per cent of the required staff.
Nearly Rs 450 billion is spent for professional courses, including medical, dental and engineering, in India.
The hidden question is whether education is a business, trade or a national mission and an instrument to bring social justice.
According to R L Jalappa of the Congress, "Around 85,000 seats were vacant in the engineering stream during the year 2003-04 in India. In my state alone, 400 seats in dental colleges were not filled up. It was very difficult for us to fill up the seats in the dental as well as for the MBBS courses. Now, the government is proposing to bring about reservation. Who will foot the bill for the tuition fees?"
The political issue of reservation in educational institution is so important, fundamental and explosive that every time it comes up for debate politicians get into their act.
While passing the law, politicians asked for more by arguing why there is a need to have reservations in the judiciary and the bureaucracy. Out of about 100 secretary-level officers, not even one is a Scheduled Caste, they complained.
There are approximately 16 to 20 million Dalit Christians who have been denied reservation. Already, a powerful section of the government, including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, are contemplating reservation in jobs in the private sector.
Many MPs cutting across party lines argued that there should be reservation for the economically backward. One MP said, "A person who migrates from one state to another should be provided reservation in that state also."
Like it happens in the case of most issues, opinions got vertically divided when the House passed the bill. It is now being argued that a new kind of reservation will pit Muslims and Christians against Dalits and tribals.
Dr Udit Raj, chairman, All India Confederation of SC/ST Organisations, says, "I am happy that the Bill has been passed but we wanted to include the minority institutions. But the Congress is indulging in appeasement of minorities. There is a truth that the Congress party appeases minorities more than it really gives them something."
Maneka Gandhi, MP from Uttar Pradesh, said, 'The government is manufacturing fertile ground to sow, nurture and harvest the evils of separatism, keep people divided on religious grounds. The present attempt is not only short-sighted but antithetical to any hopes of narrowing India's religious divisions.
'By keeping religious segregations alive, the government is going against the very purpose of the inception of these institutions,' she added.
Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh, who moved the Bill, could not hide his glee when he replied to the BJP on why minority institutions cannot be included.
'Minority rights, as specified in Article 30, should, in all circumstances, be protected. This Article has a great historical necessity. Therefore, it cannot be deleted,' he said.
'In the light of the trauma of Partition, Article 30 was put into our Constitution as a Fundamental Right because this country, this republic, gave the assurances to these people that they will not be discriminated against and that they will be protected, and, therefore, it was better for them to stay where they were.'

New Trends In High-Tech Recruiting

There is a new trend developing in the recruiting of high-tech employees. Due to the competitive nature of the business, companies are looking for new ways to recruit individuals that not only have the business and technical knowledge required to perform a specific job, but they are also looking for candidates that fit well into the corporate culture of the organization. Tech Planet is one such high-tech firm that is using this new approach to recruiting. Instead of the normal first round job interview, applicants at Tech Planet sit down to an informal meal with employees. The goal is to socialize with the employees to determine whether the applicants belong in the organization. After the initial meal, employees vote on which candidates will be invited back for the next round.
During the second phase, job applicants are asked to" bring an essay explaining how they feel about working with small businesses and how they envision their next job - plus an inanimate object that best describes them." Objects brought by potential candidates in the past have included Silly Putty, soccer balls, hair gel, and pictures of family pets. Several other companies, including executive recruiters, are transitioning from a traditional approach to this new unorthodox method of screening applicants.
At some firms, candidates are asked to play touch football or Yahtzee with other employees. The belief is that these activities can demonstrate an individual's ability to work in a team setting and how they will get along with colleagues. Though this appears to be a new trend in the world of recruiting, some employment experts question the value of this new approach. They feel that companies may overlook the most highly skilled applicants in search of "people who are just fun."
Another trend in the high-tech business world is the scarcity of information technology employees. Recruiters are facing new challenges in filling open positions within both technology and non-technology firms alike. Typically, the high-tech firms, new start-ups with hopes of going public, are having an easier time filling their IT positions as they focus on higher wages, bonus compensation, and stock options. Conversely, non-technology companies with IT needs are finding it difficult to entice qualified candidates to fill their openings. They just can't offer the perks that other technology companies are offering and are losing potential candidates as a result. Today's generation is motivated more by instant gratification and high incomes than benefits packages including medical and dental insurance.
